What is the principle behind Hunan ion-exchange columns?
The Chemical Dictionary explains the principle and application of Hunan ion-exchange columns. A Hunan ion-exchange column is a device in which cation- and anion-exchange resins, mixed in specific proportions, are placed together to exchange and remove ions from a fluid stream. Hunan ion-exchange column technology is widely used in water treatment applications, including water softening, desalination, production of high-purity water, industrial wastewater treatment, and recovery of heavy metals and precious metals. The water-softening process has been extensively applied in boiler systems. Principle of Hunan Ion-Exchange Columns
Cations and anions in ionic form in water can be removed by ion exchange. Sodium chloride (NaCl) represents inorganic salts in water. The basic reaction for water desalination can be represented by the following equation:
1. Cation exchange resin: R-H⁺ + Na⁺ → R-Na⁺ + H⁺
2. Anion exchange resin: R-OH + Cl⁻ → R-Cl + OH⁻
The overall reaction equation for cation and anion exchange resins can be written as:
RH + ROH + NaCl → RNa + RCl + H₂O
It can be seen that the NaCl in the water has been replaced by H+ and OH- on the resin, respectively, and the only reaction product is H2O; therefore, the salt in the water has been removed.
3. Mixed-hydrogen ion-exchange columns (mixed beds) are used. Consequently, the effluent water quality from a mixed bed is superior to that from a composite bed composed of a cation bed and an anion bed connected in series, enabling the production of high-purity product water.
A Hunan ion-exchange column is a cylindrical pressure vessel used for ion-exchange reactions; it is an exchange device that employs a tubular approach to ion exchange. In this type of column, the solution is introduced at one end and comes into full contact with a densely packed layer of immobilized ion-exchange resin or a flowing bed of ion-exchange resin inside the column, thereby facilitating the ion-exchange process. Once the treated solution meets the predetermined requirements or the ion-exchange resin becomes “saturated,” the column is disconnected from the production line for regeneration. The same column or another column can then be used to carry out desorption using a desorbing solution. The ion-exchange resin can be reused for subsequent exchanges after regeneration. Using a Hunan ion-exchange column essentially means that the ion-exchange resin within the column undergoes batch-wise exchange reactions with the solution, and the treated solution is promptly separated from the ion-exchange resin. The composition of the solution flowing through the ion-exchange resin bed varies both over time and along the height of the bed. This method is highly efficient and finds extensive application in industrial production.
Mixed-bed ion-exchange columns, based on their regeneration methods, can be classified into internally regenerated mixed beds, externally regenerated mixed beds, and anion-resin-transfer-regenerated mixed beds. The externally regenerated mixed bed is suitable for enterprises with small flow rates and stringent environmental protection requirements. However, due to the large number of auxiliary equipment required and the complexity of operation, externally regenerated mixed beds are now rarely used. The internally regenerated mixed bed is ideal for applications involving high flow rates, specialized water treatment operators, and wastewater treatment. In an internally regenerated mixed bed, both the regeneration process and the entire regeneration cycle are carried out within the column itself. During regeneration, the resin does not need to be removed from the equipment; instead, both cation- and anion-exchange resins are regenerated simultaneously inside the column. Consequently, fewer auxiliary devices are needed, and the operation is relatively simple.
Anion-resin external-regeneration mixed-bed: This system is also suitable for high-flow applications, specialized water treatment operators, and wastewater treatment scenarios. The anion-resin external-regeneration mixed-bed, along with its accompanying anion-resin regeneration tower, has a structure essentially identical to that of a small countercurrent-regeneration fixed-bed system. The thickness of the anion-resin regeneration column is smaller than that of the mixed bed; the required expansion height is 50% to 60% of the resin layer’s height. Therefore, the regeneration column can be shorter. However, for consistency, it is typically designed to be the same height as the mixed bed.
